Reflection
What have I learned in the poetry unit and from this project that is valuable to me?
I have read a lot of poems and got to know new poets. I improved my skills on creating a website. This unit introduced me new poets and helped me find my own voice. This was very important to me. I learned that poetry is a beautiful way to relax when we need to throw the best and the worst things out of us. Our anger, our love, our desires, our jealousies and every other feeling. I believe that this project changed me a lot and introduced me new paths. Now, we are getting the chance to show our work to other people, and of course that is one of the best things that we did in this unit.
What aspects of the unit and project did I enjoy the most?
At the beginning of the unit, I enjoyed the movie that we saw about the poetry unit and Shakespeare. We tried to write our own original poems, and I became more comfortable with writing poems. I read a poetry book of Edna St. Vincent and it was an amazing experience. I performed a poem in front of the whole class. Although I was nervous at the beginning, I felt more confident afterwards.
How did I feel about poetry before the poetry unit started and how do I feel (as a poet) now?
This project changed a lot for me. I have always loved literature. However, I didn’t use to enjoy poetry as much as I did with novels or short stories. Poetry used to seem more complex and hard to write/understand. Now, I realize that poetry is a different world which shouldn’t be compared with prose. When I tried to write poems, I didn’t like them and I thought they were not good enough. After this project, with the help of teachers and friends, I understand that there isn’t such a thing as a “good poem” or a “bad poem”. Everything we write to reflect our feelings is poetry.
