Reflection
•What have I learned in the poetry unit and from this project that is valuable to me?
From this poetry unit, I got used to reading and writing poetry. I've read a lot of poems. I contributed in a team and learned to work as a team. In this poetry unit, I started to know lots of new and good poems and I have read lots of professional poems. That way I learned that writing poetry is not a difficult task to do. I learned that I just an inspiration to write a good and rhymic poems. At the beginning of the year, I had a fear about poetry, since it was really hard to analyze in our Turkish class. However, now, I can do it easily, because my poetry skills has improved a lot with the help of our class activities. I learned that poetry is expressing your feelings in the way you want to do. Since there are lots of poem types, you don't get bored because you can always change the poetry style you want. Now, I believe that poetry is freedom.
•What aspects of the unit and project did I enjoy the most?
I really enjoyed most of the activities we did in class and out of the class. The movie, Shakespeare in Love, was one the most romantic and poetic movie I have ever seen. I loved the original poems we wrote, such as mosquito poems, recipe poems and painting poems. Those poems improved my creativeness. I became really comfortable with writing poems after writing so many great poems. Also, I really enjoyed the independent reading book I've chosen, which was Maya Angelou's "The Complete Collected Poems of Maya Angelou" I totally fall in love with Maya's poems and that's why I used one of her poems in my poetry presentation. The way she uses irony and the rhythm amazes me. As a result, this poetry unit was rally enjoyable for me.
•How did I feel about poetry before the poetry unit started and how do I feel (as a poet) now?
My feelings about poetry has changed a lot in ninth grade. Before the ninth grade, I was okay with poems, but in the first term, with the poems in our Turkish class, I really got bored of poems, since they were all similar and hard to understand. Therefore, when we were starting the poetry unit in the second term in our English class, I was really hoping that it won't be like the poems in our Turkish class. Luckily, they weren't even connected. In our English class, we wrote poems freely, without rules. We were able to write whatever we want, we just had to stick to a poem type, but they were really educative and funny at the same time. Also, I learned that there are no good or bad poems and all of the original poems are good for some people. This poetry unit has changed my thoughts about poetry in a very positive way, I really like reading and writing poetry right now.
