Reflection
What have I learned in the poetry unit and from this project that is valuable to me?
I think this unit was very efficient and it has achieved its goal on me. It made me enjoy poetry. Before the this poety unit I was not familiar with writing and reaing poems. You could even say that I was afraid of even trying. I have read a lot of proffesional poems by many well known poets. That way I started to have my own taste in poetry, like I know whether I am going to like or dislike a poem from the first glance. And being able to uunderstand and specify a poem's genre so easily, makes me really happy and I realise that I have learned a lot from this unit, in spite of my prejudice. I learned that all I need to create a beautiful poem is a little inspiration and a lot of self confidence. I feel like my poetry skills has improved a lot with our class activities and I realize that it is an accurate feeeling everytime I read a poem and think it as a joy. Now, I believe that poetry is a free way of expressing oour feelings without being afraid of someone judging us..
What aspects of the unit and project did I enjoy the most?
I have really enjoyed almost all of the activities we did in class. The "Poetry Cafe" made me feel more comfortable and realize that poetry is a sincere and genuine side of art. The movie we have watched, Shakespeare in Love, was one of the most poetic movies I have ever seen. It gave me a clue about the understanding of poetry in those years. I loved the original poems we wrote, they improved my creativeness and my self confidence. Each poem I wrote gave me self esteem and made me believe in myself. I became really comfortable with writing poems after writing so many of them. Poetry presentations were the most enjoyable part of the unit for me. I have practiced very hard on my own poem which was "Instants" by Jorge Lois Borges, and the feeling when I got after finishing my poem in front of everyone in class, was indescribable.
How did I feel about poetry before the poetry unit started and how do I feel (as a poet) now?
I didn't have any special interest in poetry before the unit. My feelings about it has changed a lot this term. Before this unit, with the poems in our Turkish class, I really got bored of poems, since they were all similar and hard to understand. So when I have learned that we were starting the poetry unit in English too, I got really disappointed. I was expecting it to be the most boring term of the ninth grade bev-cause I was that bored of poems, thanks to Turkish class(!) Luckily, they weren't even close to boring. We wrote poems freely, without rules and without anyone forcing us. The feeling of this freedom made me really enjoy poetry. They were really educative and fun to write and read at the same time. Thanks a lot to Mrs. Rau for everything but especially for making me enjoy reading and writing poetry!!!
